Dog Sports

Yesterday I took the plunge and entered Zoey in a Skyhoundz disc dog competition held at the Hazeldale dog park “Dog Day Afternoon” event. Since it was one of the first local competitions I’d ever seen, I just assumed most everyone there would be a total novice.

Uh…maybe not.

Zoey and I have been practicing for about a month now. I’m guessing a lot of the other competitors had been doing this disc-dog thing for a few years.

I didn’t let the competition scare me off though. Zoey was, not surprisingly, the only Corgi there (and really the only small dog in the whole competition). The people at the event were very friendly and helpful–I felt very welcomed and at home, if somewhat under-prepared.

We entered the freestyle competition which meant we had to do one round of ‘distance and accuracy’ (throw the disc within a designated area and get points when the dog catches it) and one round of freestyle (tricks with the disc). Our distance and accuracy could have been better (my fault–I’m not a very good thrower) but our freestyle routine went pretty well. Most of the competitors in freestyle had Aussies and Border Collies and those dogs can do some amazing tricks–as can their handlers. There were handlers that juggled frisbees, dogs that LAUNCHED themselves off their handlers chests and backs and dogs that did amazing flips probably 6-8 feet up in the air.

Zoey and I had a more simplistic routine :-) with her doing a lot of jumping over my legs (really, my ankles) and a few leg weaves. She also got to ‘roll-0ver’ with the frisbee in her mouth several times, which she thoroughly enjoyed. We both had a good time and, if nothing else, showed people Corgis can do (almost) anything the big dogs can do! If you’ve never seen a disc dog competition, I HIGHLY recommend it. They are very entertaining. I’m going to go searching for videos of other Corgis who do disc dog (there must be some) so I can see what types of tricks they do.

One of my favorite images from the Salem flyball tournament; doesn’t this picture just scream, “Flyball!”?

I was at the “Stumptown” shows this morning watching obedience and was pleased to learn there is a new UDX Cardigan! Y-Nott Rescue Sonic earned his 10th UDX leg today at the shows under judges Larry Tanner and Jill Jones. I know he earned placements in both classes and may have even picked up an OTCh point or two–I spoke to his owner/trainer Sarah briefly today and she tells me he’s about 1/4 of the way to his OTCh. Congrats to a fabulous working team!

I’m just so tickled that I got a bunch of pics of Zoey doing flyball this past weekend–thanks again to my X-Fido teammates DeAnna and Laci for snapping all the pics I used to make this collage for Zoey’s scrapbook!

Thanks to Steve Keast for putting together this fabulous video footage of all the X-Fido teams running this past weekend. Zoey is featured in two runs–one at 0:29 seconds (with Zelda, Marley and Cooper) and one at 2:55 with Zelda, Izzy and Irie. I think the first run was from late in the day on Saturday as she looks a bit tired. But that second run?? Holy Cow! I think I can say for sure that Zoey loves flyball just as much as she loves agility–she is FLYING!!!!

Enjoy!!

57: Number of races Zoey ran this weekend

767: Number of NAFA points Zoey earned this weekend

0.05: Number of seconds by which our team won one of our races on Sunday

Sunday was so fun because our team was pitted against other teams with very similar seed times. Several of the races came down to the wire. Zoey was running fourth (clearly her favorite position), so I started really pushing her passes with Blazer, the number three dog.

Our teammate DeAnna Haase snapped these wonderful pics of Zoey; the first one shows just how close one of the passes between Blazer and Zoey was.

We had another awesome day at the flyball tournament–I haven’t done the final point tally yet, but I think Zoey picked up around 750 points for the entire weekend. And, she ran in every race her team was in–57 races total.

When I wasn’t running Zoey, I usually had a camera in my hand, snapping pics of the amazing flyball dogs.

These are of our teammate Grace–a difficult dog to photograph since she runs down and back the flyball lane in about 4 seconds!

There are many days in the world of dog sports that you just rather forget about: The day Riley rolled over on his back during the ‘heel free’ portion of a novice obedience competition. The day Rugby hit the metal upright of the tire jump (with his head) while doing agility over in Redmond. The day it took Zoey, not one, not two, but SEVEN tries to make it through a set of six weave poles in an AKC JWW competition.

But today–today is a day I want to remember for  long time.

Zoey ran as a full-time height dog on our flyball team today–her first time running the height dog position by herself. She did 32 runs today–8 races, 4 heats each. When I finally tallied her points earned today (towards her fourth flyball dog title), it came to 482!!!! Her previous highest one day total was 280, so this was a HUGE day for her. Of course, since flyball is a team sport, a lot of credit also goes out to her teammates: Zelda, Marley, Cooper, Irie and Izzy.

Zoey also won the ‘most useful trick’ award during the dog trick competition today–for her “putting herself in her crate” trick!

I still can’t thank Shannon enough for allowing this little rock-star of a dog to come live with me five years ago.

Here are a couple of pics of Zoey from the tournament today courtesy of Marley’s mom and dad (Laci Wentland and Jeremy Bergerin). I love that her box turn is holding up so well!

Do you think that tail comes in handy during a box turn?

Isn't it amazing what dogs can be taught to do?

She has special, "Zoey" balls to use--same size as regular tennis balls, but softer.

Thursday night was such lovely weather for our weekly flyball practice. Not too hot, not too cold and the lighting was superb for photography.

I can’t help but stare at Cooper’s curls–they amaze me. I am thinking I might need to start a new dog breed: Irish Water Corgis. Wouldn’t Zoey look adorable with ringlets of hair cascading down her forehead?

…is that they live in the moment. Every day they take whatever life throws at them and they make the best of it.

Meet Nigel, a member of the X-Fidos flyball team. Nobody ever told Nigel flyball might be a little harder for him than for other dogs. He just goes out there and plays his heart out. He runs, he jumps and he does a beautiful, “three-paws-on-the-box” turn. He’s just living in the moment, appreciating every second of life…
